From July 1 to 3, representatives of Turkmenistan and Iran held talks on a wide range of issues related to the further development of cooperation in the gas sector in Ashgabat. The parties have signed a contract for the purchase and sale of natural gas in the volume of up to 10 billion cubic meters per year, which will be supplied from Turkmenistan to Iraq through the territory of Iran under the “SWAP” scheme. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.
Turkmenistan and Iran have been developing mutually beneficial relations in the gas sector for many years. The positive experience gained over the years in the field of supplies of Turkmen hydrocarbon raw materials to Iran and transit to third countries served as the basis for increasing the potential of bilateral partnership in this area.
The parties are gradually increasing the scope of cooperation within the framework of the implementation of agreements previously reached at the highest level. In the context of the expansion of the gas transport infrastructure, Iranian companies will start the construction of a new gas pipeline with a length of 125 kilometers and three gas compressor stations to increase the volume of gas supplies to Iran.
Ashgabat and Tehran plan, in addition to existing capacities, to increase the volume of gas supplied to Iran to 40 billion cubic meters per year.
