In the first quarter of 2024 number of employees Italy recorded +394 thousand jobs, +1.7% compared to the first quarter of 2023, while the employment rate of people aged 15 to 64 is also increasing, reaching 61.6%.
These are the figures published by Istat, according to which employment growth includes both temporary employees uncertain (+478 thousand, +3.1%), that of the self-employed (+48 thousand, +1.0%) and full-time employees (+457 thousand, +2.4%), compared to the decrease of full-time employees workers (-132 thousand, -4.6%) and part-time workers.
Where Italians are looking for work
Istat shows that the use of informal channels still prevails when looking for a job: The most common practice is to address relatives, friends and acquaintances (the share of those who do so remains at 75.7%); followed by sending applications and resumes (65.4%, +1.3 points) and consultant job offers (49.2%, +1.8 points). Among the unemployed, the share of those who apply is increasingl Center for employment of the population (27.3%, +3.3 points) and, although less intensively, the number of those who turn to private intermediary or administrative agencies is growing (20%, +0.8 points).
Number of people searching occupation decreases to 1 million 974 thousand (-123 thousand by the first quarter of 2023, -5.9%), which is due to a decrease in both the unemployed with previous work experience and those looking for a first job; the share of those who have been looking for work for at least 12 months from the total number of unemployed slightly increased and amounted to 54.5% (+0.2 points) with a total number of 1 million 77 thousand people.
Enterprises: The number of employees increases
On the business side, we can see a cyclical increase in the number of employees with an increase of 0.8%, slightly lower in full member (+0.7%) compared to underemployment (+0.9%). On the trend side, job growth is more pronounced, totaling 2.8%, slightly higher for those working full-time (+2.9%) compared to those working part-time (+2, 6%).
The hours worked per employee they grow in economic terms (+0.6%) and slightly in trend terms (+0.4%); increased use of severance pay (7.8 hours for every thousand hours worked). The vacancy rate decreased by 0.3 points in the economic comparison and by 0.2 points in the trend comparison.
On a cyclical basis, the cost of labor per unit of work in full-time equivalent (WU) increases by 0.1%, and the same intensity of growth in wages and social contributions; from the point of view of the trend, the growth of labor costs is more noticeable and is 1.6%, and is due, in particular, to the wage component, which increases by +1.8% compared to the growth of social contributions by +0.9%.
